'A Memoir of Subud' by Varindra (Tarzie)Vittachi is a beautiful tribute to his years in Subud and his close relationship to Bapak Muhammah Subuh, the founder of Subud. Vittachi was a well known and respected journalist, correspondent for the Sunday times, director of the United Nations World Population Year, deputy executive director of UNICEF, and Chairman of the World Subud Council for twenty-five years. The book is a wonderfully intimate account of his experiences in Subud and especially of his relationship with Bapak Subuh. Varindra was a great storyteller, but also a sceptical journalist which sometimes created conflicts with his spiritual and material ideals. There are also interesting stories of his encounters with world leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. The 88 page book is in near-mint condition except for some slight age wear on the cover and corners, and was printed in 1988. It is a fascinating book for anyone interested in learning about the spiritual practice and the reality of the Subud experience from the point of view of one who was close to Bapak and the inner workings of the organization.
