19th century hand painted portrait. Really a large portrait miniature. It measures 25 cm by 19.5 cm framed (9.3/4 inches by 7.3/4 inches). Watercolour. Interesting study - whereas the face is very well painted and a very sensitive rendition, the clothing is rather crude in comparison. The gold mount is showing signs of green tarnish, and there are two scratches in the glass in one corner. The frame has a silver gilded beading around the portrait and mount, and all is encased in burgundy morocco leather (which has some wear on the front edges). It has a top-mounted hanging ring, and the rear carries a gold embossed stamp Mr Herbert Watkins, 179 Regent Street. Whether Mr Watkins is the framer, the artist, or the subject I have no idea. Overall very good condition.
