View Larger Image   Thayer Screwdriver Wood Handle 18 inch Rare!   Description: This is a rare and hard to find 19th century turn-screw, or slot screwdriver marked "W. E. THAYER MFG. CO." on one side of the steel. The overall length is 18", and the slot tip width is 1/2" at the end. This is a good heavy duty, well made screwdriver with a well attached hardwood handle that features a heavy duty brass ferrule link between the main shaft and the handle to reduce the possibility of cracking the handle under stress. The handle has a small chip off one side near the end of the handle, the chip is about 1/4" long, and we note two minor grain separations in the handle near the ferrule, but these are both contained by the ferrule, and do not extend more than half the way to the other end of the handle, so the handle is very solid. This is a very useable screwdriver, has a very nice straight, flat steel bar stock with a nice tip, nicely tempered and hardened at the tip. The bar has a past owner's name on it, "C.J. GOERKE" very neatly stamped. Overall this screwdriver is in very clean and straight condition, with nice formed tip, in ready to use condition. Nice design, typical of screwdrivers from this 1870's era!
