Goodell Smooth Plane No. 4 Size Antique Rare!

Description:
Offering this nice, clean No. 4 size (9" long) (smooth bottom) smooth plane retaining about 30% of it's original paint intact. This is a rare plane marked in cast letting in front of the knob "GOODELL". We have had this plane for a number of years, hoping to find more information about which Goodell made or marked it. It is a unique design! It has no lateral adjustment, but has a depth adjustment similar to a gage plane. The is a L-shaped bracket that is attached to the back of the cutter, one leg of the bracket fits snug into a slot in the threaded thumbscrew, works real well. It has an overall lower profile in design, even the handle is shorter than say a Stanley No. 4 smooth plane, but otherwise the footprint is the same as the Stanley No. 40. The low profile handle has a washer and nut, instead of the normal hidden countersink type of nut like on the Stanley models. This plane is in good working condition, but has a few tight hairline cracks around the mouth and on the sides near the cross pin. These hairline cracks are not mismatched with the joining surface, and none of them goes to the extend of a piece breaking off even in normal use. But I would reccomend using this plane, since it is so rare and unique. The wood appears to be hardwood to me, handle and front knob. The tote or handle has has a rosewood stain and clear lacquer finish, some stain worn of, not as much stain on the front knob, both are solid no cracks. Both are nice looking, nice smooth finish, functional. This plane cutter iron is 2" wide, and is not marked. There is some wear, a few edge dings, no pitting, a few small imperfection in the casting, small voids along the top of one side. The bottom is clean, flat and smooth, no rust, very clean. There is plenty of length on the sharp cutter, and all the adjustments work smoothly. This plane has a good cast thread post behind the cast frog area, very sturdy, works just fine. This casting appears to be an earlier casting from around the mid-1800's era, but it is hard to tell for sure. The purpose of the metal plate that is attached to the underside of the cap cover is not clear to us, but I think it was allow the user to attach different types of chip breakers to the cap as desired. One could also adjust the chip breaker section a little bit also, since the two screw fit through slotted holes. Lots of intersting design detail on this one, yet no patent numbers or dated marked on it anywhere! Unique, and rare!
