In November 1944, the United States 28th Division and German 89th Division halted their savage and costly HuertgenForest fighting in the Kall River Gorge, Germany, in a humanitarian truce to treat and evacuate their casualties. The Huertgen Forest Battle was the longest battle on German ground during World War II, and is the longest single battle the U.S. Army ever fought.

The original painting was presented to Pennsylvania Governor TomRidge on Nov. 12, 1996 in a ceremony at the Capitol in Harrisburg, PA. The painting has been presented to the 28th Division and is on permanent display in the Division Headquarters in Harrisburg.
