Larry Hayden biography 1934-2006Following graduation from St. Theresa High School in Detroit, he worked at Triad Studios in Detroit. From 1957 to 1959, he was in the US Army, stationed in S. Korea where he worked as an illustrator for the Army Newspaper. After Hayden left Triad, he quickly achieved success carving waterfowl, being the first five-time Best of Show winner. Larry won the Floating Decorative Decoy contest at the World Championship Wildfowl Carving competition and is recognized as one of the most important bird carvers in the industry. His ideas about the way a decoy should be made influenced many of the decorative decoy makers working at that time and into the 21st century.Bird carving was only one aspect of Larry Hayden\'s art. By 1977, he started entering duck stamp competitions, winning ten duck stamp painting competitions from 1977 through 1995. He is recognized as a legend in the field of waterfowl art and carving and will be greatly missed.
