Designed by Orazio Satta, it was animportant development for Alfa Romeo as themarque\'s first car built entirely on a productionline and first production car without a separatechassis. It was also the first Alfa Romeo offeredwithleft-hand drive. The car was introduced at the1950 Paris Motor Show.
1900 Berlina and Sprint
The 1900 was offered in two-door or four-doormodels, with a new 1,884 cc (bore 82.55 mm(3.3 in), stroke 88 mm (3.5 in)), 90 bhp (67 kW),4-cylinder twin cam engine. It was spacious andsimple, yet quick and sporty. The slogan Alfaused when selling it was \"The family car that winsraces\", not-so-subtly alluding to the car\'s successin the Targa Florio, Stella Alpina, and othercompetitions. In 1951 the short wheelbase 1900C(c for corto (Italian for short)) version was introduced.It had a wheelbase of 2,500 mm (98.4 in).[4] In the sameyear the 1900TI with a more powerful 100 bhp (75 kW)engine was introduced, it had bigger valves, a highercompression ratio and it was equipped with a doublecarburetor. Two years later the 1900 Super and 1900TI Super (also 1900 Super Sprint) with 1975 cc enginewere introduced (bore increased to 84.5 mm (3.3 in),stroke unchanged). The TI Super had two doublecarburetors and 115 bhp (86 kW). Transmission wasa 4-speed manual on basic versions and 5-speedmanual in Super Sprint version, the brakes were drumbrakes. The 1900 had independent front suspension(double wishbones, coil springs and hydraulictelescopic shock absorbers) and live rear axle.
1954 1900 Super Production at the company\'sMilan plant continued until 1959: a total of 21,304were built, including 17,390 of the saloons.
The chassis was designed specifically to allowcoachbuilders to rebody it, the most notable ofwhich was the Zagato designed, 1900 SuperSprint coupé, with an improved engine andcustom body design. The Alfa Romeo 1900MAR51 (or \"Matta\") is a four-wheel drive off-roadvehicle based on the 1900-series.Coachbuilt versions.
Iginio Alessio, then general manager of AlfaRomeo, was concerned for the viability of theindependent Italian Coachbuilding industry–theadvent of the unibody chassis design wasthreatening to put the carrozzerie out of business.Alessio was also a personal friend of GaetanoPonzoni co-owner of Carrozzeria TouringSuperleggera,thus from 1951-1958 Alfa Romeobuilt five differentvariations of the 1900 unibodychassis specifically for independentcoachbuilders.
Alfa Romeo gave official contracts to Touring tobuild the sporty 1900 Sprint coupé and to PininFarina to build an elegant four seat Cabriolet andCoupé. The availability of a suitable chassis led tomany other coachbulders to build versionsof the 1900.
Carrozzeria Zagato built a small series of coupéswith the unofficial designation of 1900 SSZ, designedfor racing with an aerodynamic lightweight aluminumbody and Zagato\'s trademark double bubble roofOne-off specials where numerous from the famousBertone BAT series of aerodynamic studies, to aninfamous sci-fi like Astral spider designed byCarrozzeria Boneschi for Rafael Trujillo thedictator of the Dominican Republic.
