Up for sale here is a 1634/36 edition of the most influential and beloved version of the English Bible! First published in 1611 and indisputably the most influential of English Bible translations, the impact of the King James Version on piety, language and literature is incalculable.
Combined with John Speed\'s engraved Genealogies, this is a true mid to late 17th century compendium of English Religious Works that are important, inspiring and intrinsically and spiritually valuable.
A truly fascinating find, this is a RARE early King James Holy Bible, containing FOUR BOOKS IN ONE (BCP, GENEALOGIES, BIBLE,PSALMS). A rare and important bible; this late seventeenth century finely bound King James Holy Bible was printed during the reign of Charles I in London, 1639, & is bound with the Apocrypha and both Testaments, as issued. Bound together with John Speeds engraved Genealogies, including a rare folding version of the engraved map of Canaan, as well as a Booke of Common Prayer and a Whole Booke of Psalmes.--------0-------Bound in desirable yet worn original stamped leather with metal bosses and corner pieces (one loose), as well as the remnants of a clasp system; the spine carrying raised bands, with some rebacking and repair, as shown. Some wormholes to the leather, which pervade a portion of the pages as well. Binding and hinges secured. Large portion of the Booke of Common Prayer at the front; starting at the end of the Morning Prayer with the first 5 or 6 leaves edge losses and repairs. Genealogies appears complete with the folding map and engraved leaves, including the Adam and Eve plate, some repairs at the folds, as shown. Bible retains both engraved titles, both Testaments and Apocrypha. Huge engraved King James seal in front, as well as additional illustrated headers featuring Biblical scenes, various borders and similar devices throughout. Psalms and Genealogies titles with woodcut borders. Text in double column, unpaginated. The Old Testament lacks 3 pages from Ecclesiastes ch10:11 to Isaiah ch V:19, (which are loosely insertedfrom a similar 18th century Bible), and one leaf from Jeremiah chXXXII: 30 to chXXXV:2 (also supplied from the same similar 18th century volume). Corner tear to Genesis ch 41/42 affecting a couple words atthe edge of the text, tear to the side of Exodus ch VI affecting the marginal notes and one or two letters at the text edge, edge nick to Samuel ch IIII/ V affecting a couple of letters. 3 leaves from Kings chVI cropped close at the bottom corner affecting a few words, 5 leaves of Psalmes croppedaffecting some marginal notes but not the main text. The NT is complete. Psalmes at the end retains title but lacking all afgter page 88 (one or two leaves at the end). Browning, staining and ink marking here and there to the pages. Family records and inscriptions in various places as well, please see pics at link below for details. Overall a very nice find in a desirable version of binding with many religious works bound together as well. Measures 7\" x 4.5\" x 2.75\"; smaller than the standard Breeches Bible size but bigger and thicker than the smaller 17th century John Field Bibles, almost like a \'stunted\' Breeches Bible. Sold as-is. more pics: This is a truly historical find, and is a treasure that only few can call their own. Overall an opportunity to purchase a stunningly designed early KJV at an affordable price.
