In around 1880, the New Yorker company S. F. Hayward started manufacturing a fire extinguishing grenade (patented 1871), which consisted of a coloured glass container containing a liquid substance. If thrown into a fire, the glass would break, the liquid would be released and, as a result of the heat, emit large amounts of gas which would then extinguish the fire.

*The wrapping on the neck istin foil like. The foil wrapping does come off the neck of bottle, but slips back on easily. As you can see in pictures part of the tin foil has been torn. There is a graphic on top of the tin wrapping, but I can\'t make it all out. Looks like a hand holding up a sign? It also has some wording that I can\'t make out.*
