Hello~
For sale is this rare and exceptional piece of functional WWI trench art.
As the use of Mustard Gas became common during WWI, it became essential to alarm those in the trenches of possible gas attacks.
Gas Gongs were created using old artillery shell casings. if a suspected gas attack was to occur, the Gas Gong was sounded to alarm troops.
The very last image i uploaded is a photo of a gas gong, the photo is not included in the sale, i uploaded it for educational purposes, it\'s very similar to this one. it hangs -to this day- in an underground bunker in France.
Here is the link to the web page that shows some old pictures of other examples>>>The First World War of Objects | World War I Centenary
This is a remarkable example, in that it features provenance of being from the Royal Canadian Artillery, the insignia badge is attached to the surface of the casing, as well, the shell casing is dated 1917. it has the original metal chain attached for the purpose of hanging it.
The shell casing measures 11.5 inches high and about 4 inches across.
Very few of these still exist, this is a splendid example, it would make for an excellent museum quality display piece, tangible history, quite rarely seen, it sheds light on the ugliness and dark days of WWI trench warfare.
I am pleased to offer it.
thank you~
