1962 apx 700 artist signatures & addresses New York City art gallery guest book:
$1800.00

An original apx 12x8 hardbound ledger with 300 numbered pages, the Standard Blank Book no. 21 that was used as a guest album / mailing list for an ongoing series of art shows curated by Sherman Drexler called \"P.S. 619\". PS 619 or Special School 619 was the name of a program of classes given to recovering addicts at North Brother Island rehab facility just off the coast of Queens/The Bronx, and the signature book is a guestbook for several gallery shows that Mr Drexler mounted to benefit the school. Starting with numbered page 2 and ending with numbered page 55, there are signings for about 7 exhibits with some blank pages in between, so about50 nearly full pages of autographs including Abstract Expressionist, Pop-Art, and Fluxus painters & sculptors, writers & critics, art collectors / curators, gallery owners, musicians and choreographers and educators and professionals and Beatniks in New York in 1962, the year of the emergence of Pop Art in New York City. This is an amazing New York art world society register for the 1962, an art forensics of a lost period, with addresses and phone numbers included. It also has to be the largest collection of historic autographs gathered naturally in one book that you may ever see.Half of the Cedar Tavern crowd is in here including the Dominican painter Dario Suro.
Below is a transcription list of fewer than half the pages including: Page 37 the Columbian OP-artist Omar Rayo with his NYC address. The top of page 38 is signed by the now obscure painter Fernando Vega who died just months later. Page 41 Jim Dine, George Segal, etc. Bottom of page 43 Wesselmann. Page 44 Billy Kluver, a drawing of a Coca-Cola cap, and Frank Stella signed with a star. Page 51 Al Hansen of Third Rail Gallery, advertising his Happenings. Elaine de Kooning, Dick Bellamy, Henry Geldzahler, Jim Rosenquist, Allan Kaprow. Even an obscure name likeReuben Tam finds a Wikipedia entry and a long art career. Each page is like this, with hours of research possibilities. MY LAST THREE PHOTOS, just added, show the autograph of Roy Lichtenstein Billy Kluver, Jason Seley, Frank Stella, and others.I worked in spare time for months transcribing & researching the names, and here is a rough draft of the project so far, nearly half-way finished. I stopped adding the addresses by page 4. Mind you, most of the signatures are followed by addresses, whch is remarkable. There are hundreds of names in this book that are not even in the following research. You can peek at the later pages I posted for an idea, or you can attempt to visit my flickr.com see if this album of 50+ photos will load for you. I think you have to subscribe. In any event, enjoy perusing this remarkable document.page

27.... about 23 pages to go. The rest of this book is the buyers pleasure / treasure and research. This could take years.Found this recently on the web, one of the very few artifacts from this school:
In 1952, Riverside Hospital, located on North Brother Island in the Easter River between Queens and the Bronx, established Special School #619 – an institution for rehabilitating drug-addicted teens. After being abandoned and deemed ineffective in 1963, photographs from Special School #619 have been released showing patients involved in rehab activities such as pottery and dealing with going ‘cold turkey’.
