3-SlotChromed Payphone with Original Sunlight Yellow Color Accents
From1912 to around 1957 most payphones were black. In early 1957,Automatic Electric announced 8 colors and later in 1957, AutomaticElectric announced 10 full colors or 2 tones (page 203 and 204 in thePayphone History Book). The same colors were used in their ordinarydesk/wall home phones. The only painting done was on the bodies ofthe payphones. Everything and anything that was plastic was coloredplastic and not painted. Since at least 1980 and up until 2005, I\'ve dabbled in payphones, encountering numerous opportunities topurchase small sums of payphone items some of which were remaining manufactures inventions, such as these colored parts. During the week of March 20-24, 2017 I sorted out what few originalcolor-plates I have and figured I\'d try to re-assemble the few chromeAutomatic Electrics with them while I\'m able. Here is one. Thecolored plastic you see here is not remade in the 1980s, 1990s or2000s. They are remains from when used on Automatic Electrics infrom 1957 to 1972 when Automatic Electric and Northern Electricceased 3-Slots. I know of no one who has tried to remake these partssince 1957-1972. Did they “pretty them up” this way originally? I think so. The shroud is original payphone plastic. The handsetand cord came from a 1950-60s Automatic Electric desk/wall telephonewith the same color of plastic. Nothing is aftermarket. It wouldseem that plastic fingerwheel would have been commonplace along thesame era of 1957 – 1972. The attractiveness of a chrome payphoneis enhanced by the inclusion of it\'s plastic being of a differentcolor. The shroud and face/number plate are original equipment(1957-1972) pieces of sunlight yellow (as Automatic Electric calls it(looks more like gold to me)) color as originally designed forpayphones. The handset and cord are generic or applicable to apayphone or any Automatic Electric 1957-1972 landline telephone(AE80/90) of the same color as the dial.
Nota cheap plastic repro! Very original and traditional. Thishas 2 old repro parts (back and top). (Not easy to detect, but I amtelling you because I know). The bottom housing, door,(Thisone has a 1930\'s style old vault door but is held in by a spring, nolock therefore no key.),coin gauge, hook, handset, dial unit, terminal strip, andrelay-chute, locks, direction card unit and other parts are old. Also new is the key, the cardboard directions and channels. Thebottom housing is old (1960s Northern Electric) . It has the coinreturn \"flipper\" bucket as initiated in June, 1956 intoA.E.s (pg 200) The coin relay and hopper assembly replaced the old2-coil unit in the NE\'s beginning in Sept. 1963 (see pg 213 PayphoneHistory). It is easy to misrepresent by leaving something out.Omission, thus silence can be by intent or by error. Those who knowme well, know that I try to cover all the bases. But ask questionsabout anything in case I forgot something. The door that you see inthis phone is not repro! It is a true genuine OLD door of heavy steeland called a vault door. It was manufactured to hold a 10L lock. Ican supply this if needed to hold valuables in the vault. Lockingthis door in is very successful in preventing theft since the vaultthus is quite un-enterable. Thisdoor now is held in by a springnot a lock,therefor no lock no key.

Very strong effort is applied to represent the phone asit is described and shown; that is what you should receive. These arenot lightweight, and shipping costs be what they are don\'t seem toreduce even though gasoline prices have gone down. A certain amountof responsibility lies with you, a buyer in observing the reality ofthe purchase. Anythingthat was phone can still be a phone; with the re-arranging of wiresand hooking up a line-cord (providing that the dial is okay and thehandset has functioning capsules). I have more of these and am inpursuit of selling all. If you drop coins through, the gong and dongshould sound off as originally, although I did not try it. This is anice coin-op item although it doesn\'t require a coin to operate as itis now.
