77 year old BOEING FLYING FORTRESS B-17C – outstanding in Condition and History For Sale

Right from the start in early 1930s the B-17 project of BOEING AIRPLANE COMPANY became a story of success. Viewing the military situation the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC) made a request for 200 heavy bombers. BOEING won the competition with Model 299/XB-17, but lost the order because prototype crashed several days later. Nevertheless Boeing got new order by order for their powerful long range, heavily armed and armor-plated 4-piston-engine bomber. A total of 12,731 units were built from 1940 to 1945 and made the FLYING FORTRESS to \"NO. 3 of MOST PRODUCED BOMBER ALL TIME\" behind the B-24 \"Liberator\" and German multi role Junkers \"Ju 88\". For generations the B-17 was the incarnation of a mighty, heavy armed, armor plated, nearly indestructible Fortress in the sky, simple to identify by its huge tail rudder, too. In contrast to the big-rudder-shaped B-17 few series – the prototype XB-17 and the B-17 C/D versions had a smaller \'classic\' shaped tail rudder and were partially deployed for the US Army Air Force and mainly sold/delivered to the Royal Air Force of Great Britain on base of the \'land lease contract\', because most of all US bomber squadrons, fighting at central Europe theater, started from the \"Aircraft carrier England\" against the enemy in Germany and elsewhere.

The heavy desk model is a perfect preserved original period chrome rarity of a Flying Fortress B-17C/D (named \"Fortress Mk.I\" by British Royal Air Force (RAF)). Its absolute rareness complies to a number of about 100 actual delivered B-17C/D to USAAC and to RAF. It\'s top-notch rarity bears on the 4 embossed letters \"R A A F\" on the chromed base in shape of the Australian Continent – and that\'s the story behind: The USA were interested to establish Australia as another large land based Aircraft Carrier against Japan in Pacific theater, and BOEING was ever interested to sell B-17. But UNITED KINGDOM intervened prompt – first as the RAF needed any experienced Australian Fortress pilot for their squadrons in Europe – and foremost the UK prevented any field of independence of down under. So Australia never got a strong own shield and no RAAF-signed Fortress. The item belonged to the estate of an Australian Commander, who piloted a Fortress Mk.I for the RAF. The rare historic model is still glossing excellent, rotating on its elaborate structured swivel-mounted chromed andblack lacquered RAAF base – all original and in best condition.
