ANTIQUE JAPANESE TOOL HUGE FORGED IRON MAEBIKI NOKOGIRI WHALEBACK SAW w/ COVER:
$350.00

This huge antique Japanese saw or nokogiri was made by a Japanesemasterblade maker over acentury ago . It is the type of saw used in woodworking and Japanese carpentry that cuts on the pull stroke, unlike European saws which cut on the push stroke. This allows it to have a thinner blade that cuts more efficiently and leaves a narrower cut width (kerf). Made of the high qualitylaminatedcarbon steel and carefully milled by hand by a Japanese blade maker.
The hand pounding in this hand forged blade can still be seen in pictures 4 & 5.Note the smaller teeth toward the handle end of the blade (see pictures 8 & 9). This was used to help make an efficient starting cut before proceeding with the larger teeth.
This timber nokogiri saw is complete with all teeth and along with adark aged patina, and, with exception to some very minor oxidation, remains invery fine conditionthroughout as seen in the enlarged pictures. All teeth are complete andstill sharp. A rare piece of character and quality from over a century past. Known also as a \"whaleback\" saw due to the thick arching form of the back of the blade, the thickness of this blade helped to create a straight \"rip\" cut down the length of a log. This type of saw required an especially powerful kobiki-shokunin (sawyer) as seen in the 1830\'s Hokusai woodblock print in the last picture (not included).Measures 38\" overall (97 cm). With a blade length (teeth area) of 21\" long by 13\" wide (54 x 33 cm). Old world craftsmanship for the new world craftsman! The sugi (cryptomeria) wood handle looks to be original and still in very fine condition with a century of warm patina (see picture 5) on this well preserved nokogiri \"whaleback\" saw. This nokogiri comes with the original wooden cover for the blade (see pictures 6 & 7).
