ANTIQUE MERCANTILE HANGING SCALE ~ MICHIGAN SCALE CO. - KALAMAZOO, MI ~ 1879 For Sale

Up for sale is this fantastic antique twin brass beam wall mount (no bracket) mercantilehanging scale made by the Michigan Scale Company in Kalamazoo, MI. This has a cast inpatent date of Dec. 2, 1879 and is marked \"U.S. Standard 5485\" on one of the beams.

The Michigan Scale Companywas the first true scale manufacturer in the state of Michigan, existing from 1879-1906. Unique among this type of scale is that it could weigh in fractions of an ounce, even though its capacity is 600 lbs. No other scale like this, before or after, had that kind of accuracy. The notches on the vertical bar and the long handle allow a load to be setting on the floor or a cart; then the scale was raised up in the notches until it was tight, and finally you lifted the long handle to raise the load off the floor.

I have been told (not verified)that this scale came from a slaughterhouse in Moline, Michigan that was owned by Bob Poll and subsequent others and has since been torn down.
