About all that I know of this artistic shell is that it was purchased by my husband’s late brother between 1958 and 1960 at a gun show in Los Angeles. It measures 14.5 inches high with a base diameter of almost 2.5 inches. It is brass and has an intricate Asian or perhaps South Pacific detail including palm trees and a thatch roofed house on one side and a figure with a pointed hat leading a horse or mule and cart, on the other. The figure appears to be carrying a weapon. It is too early for Vietnam but might be from the World War 2 era. The only markings that I can make out on the bottom of the piece show well in the photos and include W N Y (Washington Naval Yard?) and the initials E.H.C.L. and anchor and then W.L.L. The C in the first group might be an O., as well. It is a beautiful piece and would fit well with other brass carvings of the genre.
