This is the twelfth lot from the third and last jewel of the Paulson collection, the complete collection of FLASH GORDON Sundays, spanning the period from inception through the 1950s. The other two jewels were, first \"PRINCE VALIANT\" (mostly sold, quite a few dupes left) and secondly, \"TARZAN\" (all sold, just a couple of dupes left.)As a very dedicated collector, Mr. Paulson always sought to refine and upgrade the Flash Gordon Sundays in the collection. For this strip, collectors know that it is very difficult to find Sunday pages with vibrant, unfaded colors.
Furthermore, collectors know that the \"Saint Louis Post Dispatch\" (SLPD) had one of the best color presses in the business, so its comics pages are much sought after. World War II is in full swing, and newspapers are finding it hard to obtain enough paper to publish the Sunday comics in the lavish large-size spreads of prewar times... and so the big size reduction of the Sunday comics begins. Papers drop from full to 2/3 size, and also to half. Fulls are harder and harder to come by, as fewer newspapers can afford the size!Yet Mr. Paulson was undaunted, and was able to put together a near-complete year of fulls! Paper is in excellent condition, paper is mostly cream-colored, going to a light brown on bottom and some top edges. These are near pristine pages... it\'s just that some have a bit of archival taping on the edges, mostly bottoms, and occasionally on top and sides. You\'ll have to wait a long time to see another high-quality, near complete run like this!
