This is anantique 1/2L Porcelain Beer Stein in the Rookwood Style depicting a young African-American girl wearing a hat. Rookwood pottery in Ohio pioneered this technique of painting with multiple layers of glaze to give the piece an extremely glossy and durable shine. The inlay lid matches the same style as the body of the stein with the dark, high-gloss color. This style was copied by many makers including those in Germany. This is a porcelain stein that also has a lithophane in the bottom inside with a domestic scene of a man and woman. Based on the lithophane, the stein appears to be of German origin even though the outside decoration is of an African-American little girl. The maker of this stein is unknown as most from this time period did not mark theirporcelain wares. This likely dates from between 1890-1910. This may be a hand-painted image or may be a transfer. The many layers of glaze make this difficult to determine. While I believe it is hand-painted, another member, believes this is more likely a transfer as there is no artistsignatureon it.Either way, this is a very unusual stein, with an adorable little girl depicted and would make a great addition to any stein collection or black Americana collection.
The stein is in excellent condition with no chips, crackshairlines or pewter damage. There may be slight scuffing of thepaint, but I did not notice any on examination. It looks like there may be two tiny areas of pitting. Please see photos as they are part of the description of the stein and provide the most detail.
