Beautiful antique religious French 17th century small cast iron fireback / hearth panel / wall decoration depicting who Saint Barbara can be seen on the panel with a tower in the background. The tower represents a story in which her jealous father locked her in a tower, claiming she was too beautiful to be seen.All further information ( and there is a lot) on this saint can be found on internet. There are many interesting stories about her.Saint Barbara became the patron saint ofArtillerymen. She is also traditionally the patron of armourers, military engineers, gunsmiths, miners and anyone else who worked with cannons and explosives. She is invoked against thunder and lightning and all accidents arising from explosions of gunpowder. She is venerated by Catholics who face the danger of sudden and violent death in work.She was for example also the patron of the Gunnery Branch of the British Royal Navy as well as the patron for the town Santa Barbara in California, U.S.A. The panel measures 22 x 27 cm ( 8.5\" x 10.5\"). Of course it could also have been a panel from an early stove. The condition is very good. It is left as was found so no cleaning or any kind of restoration has been done.
