That can isn\'t from the 1920\'s, it\'s much older, from the nineteen teens, the infancy of the petroleum industry and even moroting- before there were any gas pumps, even the rudimentary ones. Gasoline was loaded into these type cans from a railroad car, or a tank truck filled from the railroad car delivered to a distributor. Very early gas cans were made by the same manufacturers who made milk cans, because as petroleum consumption grew, barrels became more expensive, that and wooden vessels were more prone to bursting when dropped, or leaking.
Gasoline was then poured from your type can into a smaller vessel, and then funneled into a vehicle -with a funnel lined with chamois to keep impurities such as rocks and dirt from getting into the gas tank because early gasoline was likely to have sand, dirt, rocks, grass, you name it even vermin and snakes-stuck inside. It was an extremely dangerous operation, spills were alarmingly regular, and sometimes gasoline ignited from hot elements under the car with disastrous results. That\'s one of the reasons why the early filling stations looked like rat traps, because they burned down so frequently, and people couldn\'t invest too much money in something that would eventually burn down since the oil companies did not build the stations that carried their products, the station owners did. The only reason why early gas stations rose to the level of architectural art is because many of them, because of their cheapness, were considered to be \"eyesores\" and people complained for changes, and of course, as gasoline delivery systems improved, and safety was elevate to a higher margin, individuals could safely invest in improving the appearance of their buildings, along with the help of the companies they sold for.
