Description

ANTIQUE ENGLISH STERLING SILVER TRAVELING INKWELL

Wonderful antique heavy sterling silver traveling inkwell measuring 2\" square and 2-1/8\" in height - actual weight with the tiny blown glass bottle removed is 173.6 grams. Featuring a plain square shape with sturdy, hinged top, exterior front is fitted with a bracket arm and coordinating notched pin for securing the lid before travel. Interior is beautifully designed with a hinged round dome top cap held in place with three clamps - the inside of the cap is finished with a hard plastic material (I think this is Gutta Percha) - when the cap is closed over the ink bottle seated into the compartment, it forms a seal so that no ink will leak during movement.

The case bears hallmarks and stamps on the side of both the exterior lid and bottom - there are also hallmarks on the interior cap top as well - with the exception of the bottom plate underneath the glass ink bottle which is marked E.P. for electroplate, all other parts are sterling silver. Hallmarks are Gy&C for Grey & Co., a firm founded in London by William Grey in 1876 until 1936, with the London town mark and date letter \"i\" for 1904. Interior lid appears to be gilded - sterling gage is heavy, and quality is exceptional. Very minor usage marks with a few fine pin point dents, minor blemishes, and scuffing from the front lever action - blown glass bottle has cased bubbles - no other condition issues - hallmarks are clear. I am including the hand written note that was folded up within the lid interior.  A beautiful, hard to find travel inkwell - lovely addition to any home, collection or display!
