This vintage (circa 1920\'s) restored Griswold Slant Logo Size No.18 P/N 919/920 cast iron waffle iron with High Collar Base 88 (P/N 915B) has been thoroughly cleaned and seasoned with organic coconut oil. This waffle iron sits flat on a granite counter top with only slight movement.The lettering and logos are all crisp and clear.It has no chips, cracks or repairs, and is ready to use or display.
The paddles are marked starting at the top running clockwise “HEART\"; STAR”; \"U.S.A. 18\"; \"PAT\'D MAY-18-20\"; “ERIE, PA No.”. In the middle is the double circle slant “GRISWOLD\". On the outer rim at 5 o\'clock is \"919\" on one paddle, and \"920\" on the other. The paddles are about 7 1/2\" in diameter, and 16\" long including the handle.
The high collar base is marked on the bottom with \"No. 88\" and along the rim \"915B\"; on the other end along the rim is marked \"THE GRISWOLD MFG. CO. ERIE, PA., U.S.A.\". The base is about 11 1/4\" in diameter and 4\" high - and has a bail handle. This waffle iron would be a great addition to any collection. Email me if you need any further information.
Cleaning and Seasoning process: The cleaning process begins with time in a lye bath. After several days of soaking, the waffle iron is scrubbed with steel wool using \"Bar Keepers Friend\". If need be, it’s put back in the lye bath for another round. After all the rust and build up is removed, it’s soaked in a white vinegar bath for an hour or so, lightly scrubbed with steel wool, and given a thin coat of olive oil. To season the waffle iron, it’s put in the oven at 200° for 15 minutes. After it’s been heated, it’s coated with a liberal amount of organic coconut oil and wiped down to remove any excess oil. The waffle iron is put back in the oven at 300° upside down for 15 minutes; then wiped down again to remove any excess oil. It’s then put back in the oven – this time at 425°- for about 30 minutes to 1 hour. Once the waffle iron cools down, the process is repeated several more times to create a protective surface.
Just a reminder, cast iron pieces are not designed for the newer glass/ceramic cooking surfaces. Also, since cast iron can be damaged if dropped or mishandled, I safely pack each piece for shipping. Given the value, I will also be insuring this item for shipping.
