Rare Mason\'s Challenge Blacking1800\'s Counter Advertising Display Box1851-1870\'sFrom Connecticut EstateJust Reduced!
Neat 1800\'s Early Americana advertising piece. This one goes way back. Tongue & grooved box & nice period graphics. The closest item I could find to this sold for $233 on , but it did not have such nice graphics. Information below & last photo in gallery were from free Wikipedia (although I financially support them).
The box is in fair shape given the age (approx 150-165 years old). The graphics are as seen in the pictures. Despite the company\'sprominencein the early America\'s Northeast, I could find very few of their items selling anywhere.
The information below is from Wikipedia, as is the photograph of the factory in picture #4 in gallery. This building is where this Mason\'s box was made. I found it while researching the item. Please review the many pictures taken for your consideration. The 138/140 Front Street address is noted on the box and the box predates \"shoe polish\", when the Blacking term was still used.
In 1832, James S. Mason of Philadelphia began the commercial production of shoe blacking and inks. In 1851, James S. Mason & Co. constructed a building at 138/140 Front St. where ultimately ten million boxes were produced annually, to hold tins of blacking produced by two hundred employees. Later, tins of blacking were labeled as Mason Shoe Polish. This business ceased operation in 1919... (courtesy Wikipedia)The box is roughly 12.25\" x 9.25\" x 2.875\". The lid is barely held on by staples and
oneside of lid hasdisconnected. Box is tongue & groove & fairly
solid other than asseen inpictures. Has agreat display quality
despite wear to item.Item was bought from a Connecticut collector/dealer\'s estate sale.We ship with great care & speed & fully insure.
