GLIMPSES OF AMERICA A Pictorial and Descriptive History of Our Country’s Scenic Marvels, Delineated by Pen and Camera. By J.W. Buel, Who, in a Special Photograph Car and accompanied by a corps of accomplished artists, visited every part of the United States and Canada, to picture and describe all the wonderful scenery found therein. © 1894 Published by the Manufacturers' Book Company, Philadelphia. Oversized 14” x 11” cloth hardcover edition. Illustrated with historic photos and tinted frontispiece. 350 pages.

Condition: VERY GOOD ANTIQUE CONDITION. Exterior has light wear and soiling. Front inner hinge cracked, first blank endpapers creased. Text block is firm. Text is clean and complete. No loose or missing pages. Illustrations look great. An original and important Victorian collection of early American photographic images from 1894. I have sold this book at sale for a LOT of money in the past -- see No. 150788000372. Here's a chance to get your own original 1894 edition!

Description:

In the 1890s, an author named J. W. Buel loaded a group of photographers and their equipment into a special railroad car, and set out to photograph the natural wonders of America while they were still largely unspoiled. Thanks to his monumental effort, we today can enjoy these rare glimpses of our land as it appeared to the pioneers and the emigrants who headed west and saw these same sights from the jouncing seats of their covered wagons. In the preface, Buel himself describes how this book came to be:

This book was conceived more than half a dozen years ago, but a press of other engagements caused a postponement until the spring of 1890, when the publishers engaged a corps of artists, consisting of three of the best outdoor photographers in the country. A passenger car was next chartered, which was remodeled so as to provide comfortable sleeping quarters for the men in one end, a kitchen in the other, while the center was fitted up as an operating-room for taking, developing and finishing pictures. Three cameras, of as many sizes, were provided, with three thousand prepared plates, and a great quantity of paraphernalia which might be found useful for the expedition.

Thus equipped, our photographic party left St. Louis early in May, going directly to Denver, from which point we made excursions to all the near-lying parks, thence to Manitou, and by way of the Colorado Midland Railroad to Salt Lake. Our work about Salt Lake occupied considerable time, and after leaving there we proceeded to Weber Canon and then by way of the Union Pacific to Shoshone Falls. We next returned by way of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, making a sweep southward through Ouray and the Valley of the Gunnison, over Marshall Pass and to Pueblo by way of Royal Gorge ...

Some weeks were spent traveling off the line of road among the ruined villages of the Cliff Dwellers, and in photographing the more rugged scenery of the Rio Grande River. Then we continued our journey westward over the Atlantic and Pacific and Southern Pacific railroads to California, where nearly three months were spent among the towns, Yosemite Valley, Big Trees and mountains of that summer-land.

On the appearance of spring we traveled north by way of the California and Oregon Railroad, still making side trips by stage-coach and wagon, to Portland, from which point excursions were made up the Columbia and Willamette Rivers.

At Victoria, British Columbia, we took steamer for Alaska, and returning we passed through the Cascade Range over the Northern Pacific, working our way back east. But we continued to make detours a long way off the main line of the road, thus visiting the Falls of the Missouri, the Black Hills, the Custer Battlefield, Devil's Tower and Yellowstone National Park, in which latter wonderland we spent two weeks photographing its scenery and extraordinary formations.

More than three-fourths of the grandest views were inaccessible by rail, so other means of travel had to be adopted. Often it was by stage-coach, but frequently donkeys were our sole reliance, and when these little animals could not carry us to the most rugged points, we shouldered our instruments and scrambled to the peaks and abysses of necessary observation.

The difficulties, dangers and hardships thus encountered were both great and numerous, while the expense involved was so beyond our first calculations, that had it been anticipated in the beginning, the enterprise would certainly never have been undertaken ...

This enormous collection of photographs – nearly 400 of them -- focuses primarily on lands west of the Mississippi, particularly the western states of Colorado, Utah, California, the Dakotas, Wyoming, Montana, Arizona, Idaho, etc. A good portion of the book also focuses on the natural wonders of the west, the Grand Canyon – or the “Grand Canon of the Colorado,” as the author refers to it – Yosemite National Park and Yellowstone National Park. You'll even Buffalo Bill himself in here.

Author James W. Buel and his party of photographers visited all of these places to make this book possible. The photos are accompanied by a descriptive narrative reflecting the author’s experiences and touching upon the historical significance of each place.

Although the photographers of Buel's party are uncredited in the book, I have recently verified that some (though I suspect many) of the beautiful western photographs in this collection were shot by none other than William Henry Jackson, the pioneer of American western photography.

Many of the photos are in large, full-page format, creating stunning views of vistas that have long since passed into memory – and others, which, while they have been preserved in the form of national parks, have inevitably changed to keep up with demands of the modern world. Here, in these pages, the Old West still exists in all of its unspoiled beauty.

The photos themselves are reproduced in a sepia-like tint known as “royal purple.” Several selected plates were printed with a slightly different tint.

The nearly 400 photos are accompanied by Buel’s narrative text and descriptive captions, explaining his journeys and all that he witnessed with his own eyes.

In order to give you the most accurate description of this rare and extraordinary book, I have provided some helpful details below, starting with a summary of the Contents. For your convenience, and for those interested in specific views, I have also prepared a summary of the photos included in this volume, specially arranged by state or area of interest. You can see some of these historic images for yourself further down this page.

All of this is to help you make an informed decision when offerding. I hope you’ll take a few moments to have a look.
