Antique Primitive Bent Wood Double Banded Huge 19\"Mining Mineral Gem Garden Sifter Sieve Americana
This is a beautiful piece of history. I\'m not an expert in these things but I\'ll tell you what I think and why I think it. Sold as found, I encourage you to research as you see fit. Original use could have been many things. One thing for sure is that it was used - the wear and patina are amazing!
If Stickley made a bent wood sifter this might be it. The craftsmanship that went into making this is still evident in the fact that its solid as a rock, 100 years on. The edges and sides show all the right wear marks. This piece worked very hard. I\'ve seen a lot of German craftmenship. I come from German emigres from the 1880s. I grew up in and around the lumber and hardware business that was started back then. My great grandfather and his five sons all had the Arts and Craft Stickley work ethic -Als Ik Kan—\"to the best of my ability.\"
This is bent oak, held together by its own tension, the fence wire grid system, an intricately braided reinforcement cable, or wire rope, as it was then sometimes called, and a handful of 1/2\" tacks. The wood, the wear, the patina, the repairs... ah yes, growing up in the hardware business taught that when times are good people replace but when times are bad people repair. Hard work, resourcefulness and ingenuity. This is heavy. Built to last. It may have been a grain or barley sifter but because of the repairs to the mesh it looks like it was sifting something heavier.Maybe in the garden sifting soil, or gravel, although soil tends to blacken oak. Maybe a rock hound used it to look for minerals or fossils.
A QUICK NOTE ABOUT SHIPPING- It is expensive and, no it can\'t be less. I asked at the post office if they\'d ship it for free and they said no. (although, I did get a dirty look for free). This item is about the size of a Toyota Corrola tire! Made of wood and metal its heavy too. Its an amazing piece - in a good antique store I could easily see it priced at $400 or more.
Ask if you have any questions... I\'m happy to help. Check out my other items. Cheers, Greg
