Beautiful Original Bronze Sculpture "Woman w/Child" by George Stanley -Rare
Original hand cast bronze sculpture depicts of a Woman sitting with her child in her lap. It was designed & sculpted by George Stanley, a Los Angeles sculptor & artist, who designed the Academy Award of Merit, or Oscar, as well as sculpted the Muse Statue at the Hollywood Bowl.
Biography
Born in Acadia Parish, LA on April 26, 1903. Stanley grew up and attended high school in Watsonville, CA. During 1923-26 he studied at the Otis Art Institute (he taught there during 1926-42) in Los Angeles where he was awarded a scholarship to study bronze casting at the School of Arts in Santa Barbara (he taught there during 1927-28). His career was spent in Los Angeles where he fulfilled many important municipal commissions, the most famous being the movie industry's Oscar award (designed by Cedric Gibbons). Stanley worked on the Federal Art Project in the 1930s and in 1940 was on the faculty of Chouinard Art School.
Stanley sculpted a statue of Sir Isaac Newton located at the Griffith Observatory, completed in 1934. This statue was part of a larger work known as the Astronomer's Monument. This work was a public project funded by the PWAP. Consequently, the work was signed "PWAP", with none of the five artists contributing to it receiving individual recognition. It was supervised by Archibald Gardner. Stanley designed the Oscar award based on an original sketch by Cedric Gibbons. It was first awarded in 1929. Stanley sculpted the Sculpture of the Muse of Music, Dance and Drama located at the Hollywood Bowl. Completed in 1940, this sculpture is carved from granite and stands twenty-two feet tall and two-hundred feet wide. It is Art Deco in style and serves as a retaining wall for the amphitheater, He died in Los Angeles on May 11, 1970.
