Wikipedia

John Grass,MatȟóWatȟákpeorCharging Bear(1836–May 10, 1918) was a chief of theSihasapa(Blackfeet)band ofLakota peopleduring the 1870s through1890s.He fought at theBattle of the Little BighorninMontana.

Grass was known as Charging Bear in his youth. He was born nearGrand RiverinSouth Dakotain1836. Both his father, Sicola, and grandfather, Uses Him as a Shield, wereimportant Sihasapa leaders. When he was three years old, Grasswas baptized at aJesuitmission byPierre-Jean De Smet, a Jesuit Father. Grass married three sisters, including Cecilia Walking Shield in a Lakota ceremony in 1867, and in 1894 heand Cecilia renewed their marriage vows in aRomanCatholicceremony. Some sources say Grass had four children;othersgive a larger number but many died at a young age. One son was named Own\'sSpotted, and one daughter was named Theresa Grass-Cross.

John Grass attended theCarlisle Indian Industrial SchoolinCarlisle, Pennsylvania, where he learnedto read and speak English fluently. He utilized his knowledge of the Englishlanguage on behalf of his people, when engaged in negotiations with the UnitedStates government.

In the 1850s and 1860s, Grassparticipated in battles against tribal enemies. He was a member of the WhiteHorse Riders Society.[1]From the late 1870s until his death, Grass served as chief justice ofthe Court of Indian Offenses for theStanding Rock AgencyinNorth Dakota.Together with his friendHunkpapawarrior Gall, Grassadvocated for formal education and agricultural lifestyles for his tribe as ameans of survival. He fought the US government\'s efforts to take more Lakotalands, and in 1888 led a widespread resistance to Pratt Commission\'s attempt tobreak up theGreat Sioux Reservation\' however, the landwas sold under the Crooks Commission\'s oversight in 1889. The US governmentfailed to honor its treaty and statutory obligations, and in 1902 Grass led adelegation toWashington, DCto convey Lakota grievancesto the federal government.

John Grass died on May 10, 1918 at his home nearFort Yates, North Dakotaon theStanding Rock Reservation.

Grass led his warriors at the 1873 battle ofMassacreCanyoninNebraska, in which a Lakota war party attacked a groupofPawneeon a buffalo hunt. A monumentcommemorating the event, one of the last large battles between Native Americantribes in the United States, was placed near the site of the canyon. Carvedupon the 35-foot granite obelisk is the face of John Grass, slightly higher andopposite the carving of Ruling His Son\'s face, a Pawnee chief also at thebattle that day.

During the time of theGhost Dancemovementand theWounded Knee Massacre, Grass advocatedpeace with the United States, which did not earn him the respect of manyHunkpapa leaders. ChiefWhite Bulldescribed Grass as: \"Agood talker... not a thinker or a smart man... could always say yes but neverno.\"

DavidF. Barry (1854-1934)apprenticed under legendary Indian and military photographer Orlando S. Goff. Barry eventually took over Goff’s BismarckDakota Territory gallery (near the Standing Rock Agency and FortYates) in 1878 while Goff was off touring military posts andreservations. Barry photographed most ofthe chiefs and participants victorious in General George Armstrong Custer’s7th U.S. Calvary debacle at the Battle of Little Bighornincluding Gall, Rain-In-The-Face, Sitting Bull, Custer Scout Curley, RedCloud, and Young-Man-Afraid-of-His-Horses.
