This beautiful, elaborately embossed antique brass gift tin dates to Christmas 1914. These boxes were sent to British servicemen and women during the First World War, as part of the \"Sailors & Soldiers Christmas Fund\" created by Princess Mary. On Christmas 2014, the tin will have its 100th birthday!These lovely Christmas boxes originally contained assorted small gifts, including cigarettes, pipe tobacco, pens and pencils, sweets and spices. I wonder what this one contained, and who the recipient was.This tin has a hinged lid; it is just the right size to keep small treasures and trinkets. Good antique condition. The hinges are in good shape; the lid opens and closes easily. There are a few tarnished spots, as shown in the photos - you could probably polish them away, but you may want to keep the original patina. There is a dent in one corner of the box, as pictured.
