French Medieval Pewter Pilgrim Souvenir / Badge of St. George - 1400 AD:
$2400.00

A rare and beautifully preserved English medieval pewter badge, depicting St. George slaying the dragon and dating to around 1400 - 1550 AD.

Sometimes it is the smallest artefacts that leave the strongest impression. There can be few objects that so vividly bring tolife the faith of ordinary medieval men and women than this remarkable pewter badge of St. George slaying the dragon. The scene is wonderfully detailed, with a sense of motion and artistry not often encountered in badges of this period. St. George is shown on horseback, his steed rearing up as he plunges his lance into the mouth of the dragon below. The right hand of god reaches out from the clouds, lending a sense of divine providence.

Bought by a pilgrim who visited St. George’s shrine at Windsor, this very badge would have been worn suspended round the owner’s neck or attached to their clothing as a protective amulet and proof of pilgrimage. Pilgrims would sometimes travel hundreds, even thousands of miles to show their devotion. Often though, on their journey back home, they would cast their souvenirs into rivers for good luck, so it is with this example, as it was recovered from the banks of the Seine in Paris.

What we are left with then is not simply a magnificent piece of medieval Christian art, but a story about a real individual who made the journey from their home in medieval France, crossed the Channel and travelled up to the royal chapel in Windsor, possibly with others, possibly alone. Upon returning to Paris, they looked upon their badge one last time before casting it into the river, probably with some unknown wish. This extraordinary artefact stands as a record of their journey.

Provenance:

Formerly in the collection of Mr. Arthur Forgeais (1822-1878).

Forgeais owned a shop on the Pont Neuf in Paris during the 1860’s. It was during this period that the Parisian authorities undertook a project of dredging the Seine, as a result a number of these badges were recovered from the silt. It was Mr. Forgeais who recognised their importance and saw to their publication in a series of volumes which he had printed at his own expense in 1862-5. In many senses he was the modern founder of the study of medieval pilgrim’s badges and ampullae. This piece was one of a number recovered from the Seine which Mr. Forgeais retained for his own items are unconditionally guaranteed to be Authentic as described.
