DescriptionDescriptionHistoric New York Herald Tribune cast iron newspaper stand, paperweight, holder
DESCRIPTION:
This sale is for the historic cast iron paperweight as seen in photos. Paperweight is approximately 10 3/4\" wide x 3\" high, and approximately 1 1/2 lbs. These paperweights were used on top of piles of papers at news stands (newstands) to keep the papers neat or from blowing away. According to an article in the New York Times, \'They thought it would be great to have a newsstand weight that they could change the copy on from time to time, and they did that.\' Surprisingly, no other publication seems to have tried stickers as an easy, inexpensive way of regularly renewing the messages on their weights. This was the only paperweight to have used an insert on the back of the weight.
