Artist:

Jan Loco was born in 1955 and did not learn of her Apache heritage until she was an adult.Chiricahua Apache artist and sculptor Allan Houser helped her find out about her family. Jan learned that she was descended from Apache Chief Loco. At that point, Jan began to use imagery from her heritage in her jewelry. One image she uses most often in her earrings and pendants is the 4 sided Morning Star.

Jan does not use any power tools in the creations of her jewelry, she only uses shears and files to cut the silver into the shape she desires. She creates the texture in her pieces by placing the sheet of silver over a rock and then hand hammers the silver until the desired texture is obtained. Jan will often search for an hour or more until she finds the surface she wants to use. She then enhances the texture by polishing the surface with varying grades of steel wool. All this hammering by hand has taken its toll on Jan and she will often have to stop working for periods of time to heal.
