The cup at the top has a long needle shape sharp for holding a fresh candle. The middle section is shaped into 5 bulbous sections representing thefive elementsphilosophy inJapaneseBuddhism. The five elements are, in ascending order of power, Earth, Water, Fire, Wind, and Void.
Includes a red Japanese Warousoku candle, made from organic plant-based wax, in contrast to typical candles which are made from paraffin (after product of refining gasoline) and zinc or lead treated cotton wick. The white wick of Japanese candles is made from rice paper (washi) and fine husks of rush (igusa) straw. The flame of Japanese candles burns with an elegant glow, constantly changing shape and shimmering, as though alive.
\'Made in Japan\' label on underside.
Approximate Dimensions: 32\" x 8\" x 8\"
The candlestand is simple, elegant and provides an important function. Perhaps it is best to use the term ‘shibui’, which describes an aesthetic sensibility that avoids the ostentatious and yet conveys a feeling of refinement.
Lighting in the West is grand with enormous chandeliers that turn night into day, while in Japan the ‘shokudai’ is meant to accompany the night and enjoy the night for what it is. This concept of illumination is all important in understanding Japanese lanterns and candle stands. These objects create the necessary minimum of light required to function in the darkness of the night, but do not alter the ambience the night has to offer.
Ideal for interior design use, entertaining, collective display, home shrine or tokonoma to illuminate an ikebana arrangement for a tea ceremony.
