History of the Lee Mines Claims
The Lee Mines, formerly known as the Emigrant mine, was one of the earliest silver producing mines in the district. Mining began in the 1800s and has sporatically continued throughout it\'s history. The mine was described in 1884 as \"...a mine with a shaft 100 feet deep and internal drifts which show vein 4 feet wide, with a rich streak of gold and silver on both walls. On the hanging wall side the streak is 6 inches and on the footwall 12 inches. Assay $200 per ton. The ore is sacked and shipped to San Francisco\" Burchard (1884, p. 163). Accessible workings in the main mine consist of more than 1,00 feet of levels and inclines and several thousand square feet of stopes. In addition, numerous inaccesible shallow workings adjoin the main workings on the northwest. The West Workings two short adits and an inaccessible shaft.
