Thisscarce and very impressive Mettlach stein stands 8.75" high to the top of the inlaid lid, by 4.25" in diameter. This stein has a classic form, with a ‘Drinking Knight’ motif designed by Heinrich Schlitt. It is a one-liter stein, the largest in this design motif. This stein is shape #3091, which is entitled "Drinking Knight", in the references. It has an etched surface and the scene is beautifully presented in a rainbow of rich colors and finished to a nice combination of matte and glossy glazes. The tavern scene depicts a Knight appearing relaxed, drinking from a stein, surrounded with scripted mottos in German, which roughly translate to \'The fireplace warms me from the outside, but the beer it does from theinside, and was at ease to Minnen.\', or something close to that. This stein has its original pewter thumblift, and an inlaid lid, which is ornately etched with a Knight presenting what looks to be a bouquet of blossoms to a Maiden. The lid and the stein are signed by Schlitt. This stein, number 3091, has all the hallmarks of Mettlach steins as can be seen in the photos, with a date of \'01\', for 1901. Thisscarce and large one-liter stein is in mint condition, and it makes a very handsome presentation!
