This listing is for the signed original watercolor painting featuring goats and sheep that you see in the photos. I purchased it at an estate sale in Oregon where I was not told its history. There were many vintage and antique items at the sale.
It is signed “Frank Austin, 1956” in the lower right hand corner. Some research tells me that Frank Austin (1937-1977) was an Navajo artist also known as Bahah-Zhonie which means “Happy Boy” in Navajo. He is known for being an artist, a textile designer and a businessman. Some references note that he was born in 1938 instead of the 1937. More information including an obituary about him can be found by searching with google.
I think that the frame is probably the original frame for the painting because I have some other pieces by a different artist framed by the same framer that were framed in 1956. The frame measures close to 18 ¾ by 16 ½ inches. The area of the painting exposed by the mat measures close to 13 by 10 3/16 inches. The framed painting weighs close to 3 pounds 7 ounces. The painting is behind glass so that there are reflections in some of the photos. Some photos are taken with the painting out of its frame. It will be shipped with the painting in the frame.
The condition is much like you see it in the photos. The painting has not been examined out of the frame so in that respect it is being sold “as is” and as described. I see one tiny spot of what appears to be paint from when it was painted that looks out of place to the left of one of the sheep. I seem a similar spot on the mat. Otherwise, from what I can see, the painting is in excellent condition. The mat looks lightly browned from age. The frame feels sturdy and shows a slight amount of wear. The frame was missing nails to hold the painting in place so I added some finishing nails to do the job. There is no paper backing on the frame. Otherwise, painting and frame are generally fine and as shown. My photos should give you a good idea of their condition.
I guarantee this painting to be as described and represented by the photos. The photos are part of the description. Please look at all of them.
Please know that the lighting in my photos is uneven and that there are shadows and reflections. Some photos are taken at an angle to avoid reflections. The colors on my monitor look close to but not exactly like the actual colors. Different monitors may show different colors.
