Please Note: There are many copies of this scarce old map offered on and elsewhere, but This map is an original, NOT a reproduction!
This scarce antique map, titled \"Plan of Orange, East Orange, Part of West Orange and Llewellyn Park,\" was made in the year 1872, just seven years after the Civil War ended. This map has original hand coloring and it was drawn on a scale of 1100 feet to the inch.
The areas covered by this map are shown in great detail, with different locales distinguished by different pastel shades of color. There are hundreds of details in this map, which shows streets and avenues, churches, schools, a bank, and so forth. And on the back of this map is another, smaller map, showing the layout of Patterson, NJ in great detail.
Probably the most interesting and historic aspect of this map, however, is its coverage of \"Llewellyn Park,\" a community within West Orange that is laid out in particular detail. Llewellyn Park was developed by Llewellyn Solomon Haskell and designed by A.J. Davis. It is recognized as having been the first planned community in America, and Haskell\'s name is listed below the title of this map. The \"Ramble,\" clearly delineated on this map, was developed as a 50-acre common area in Llewellyn Park, beautifully landscaped with streams and paths. What is especially noteworthy is that many of the homesteads throughout Llewellyn Park are identified by their owners\' names [see pictures]. At the time this map was made, Llewellyn Park was only 15 years old, and thus many of the people whose names are found on this map were the pioneer proprietors of country estates in that very new suburban community.
All of this makes this map a great piece of history for local and family historians, and for anyone interested in doing some research on this area, as it was a century and a half ago. This map is also very, very displayable. This is a large map, poster-size, measuring about two feet across (23 inches by 15 inches, to be exact) and it beautifully hand-colored,
SIZE: This historic map measures 23 inches by 15 inches overall, and the map of Patterson on the back measures 15 by 11-1/2 inches
CONDITION: This map has no significant flaws and is just about pristine. The paper is clean and free of \"foxing,\" the print sharp and clear, and the coloring vibrant. This map will display beautifully.
This map is an original - it was made 146 years ago, and is not a modern reprint or any type of AND SHIPPING
