Original 1770 Pre- Revolutionary War Large Wooden Compass Dubois Excellent Cond: $800.00
An original compass made by documented maker Charles-Adrian Dubois between 1764 and 1774. A compass that may well have seen service in the American Revolutionary War. Dubois was freed from his apprenticeship in 1762 and is recorded as working in Au Genies, Paris until 1774. Various museums in the world have examples of his work. A large wooden compass measuring 6 3/4\" by 6 3/4\". Excellent original paper label, compass rose with just a little staining. . Excellent hand engraved degree ring. Beautiful blued needle with horned pivot jewel setting. Lid engages needle lock when the lid is slid in place. Lid slides into the bottom for storage when not in use. Overall condition is excellent for an instrument 250 years old. Compass works well and needle lock engages when lid is slid in place. Entire compass body has a little bit of a twist(warp), but it is all in the same direction, so lid works on both sides as it should. All parts of the compass are original, except the glass, which was professionally replaced with correct antique glass last year.
