This sale is for an original NASA Space Shuttle High-Temperature Reusable Surface Insulation (HRSI) Tile which was discarded due to minor damage. It has no SCRAP markings and is full-size at1.5x6x6 inches.
This tile was obtained from the first Auroraspace sale in 2002. It will beshipped in a ziplock plastic bag and should be stored in a sealed bag ordisplay case (except for short periods of handling) due to the shedding ofsilica fibers from the rear white area.The fibers are non-toxic (they are made from sand) but should not beinhaled for prolonged periods or accidentally transferred from fingers to eyes. The standard warning that accompanies tilesloaned to K-12 school classes states:
The silicamaterial in shuttle tiles is not classified as hazardous either by Federal SARAor CERCLA standards. However, material from the silica fiber layer can causetemporary irritation of the throat and/or itching of the eyes and skin so thattouching a bare tile should be avoided.
