Five months before the death of her husband, deposed King Louis-Philippe, she writes in French to a bishop. asking him to pray for the King, for herself, and for France.
Autograph Letter signed: \"Marie Améle\", 2 pages (front and verso), 9½x7¼. Claremont [Surrey, England], 1850 March 21. To \"Dear Bishop\", in French, translated: \"Our very small alms didn\'t deserve your good letter for which I thank you very sincerely and above all I thank you for the good prayer you promise for my family and for myself. We regret very much, the King and I, that our present position and the [?] desire to help so many old [visitors?] and poor compatriots who suffer for us and with us, do not allow us to do more for the poor over here. I have also much regretted not to be able t go to the French chapel the day you officiated there, but I learned about it too late to make the arrangements necessary because of the distance where we are, the difficulty of the roads. I was very upset about it. I ask you again for the continuation of your good prayers for the King, for me and for France and as far as I am concerned I offer you the expression of my feeling of esteem and veneration inspired by your virtues. Your much attached\". Queen Marie Amélie of France (1782-1866), born Maria Amalia of Naples and Sicily, was the granddaughter of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and niece of Queen Marie Antoinette, guillotined during the French Revolution. She was engaged first to Marie Antoinette\'s son, Louis Joseph, the Dauphin (crown prince) of France, but he died in 1789. Forced into multiple exiles by the wars of the French Revolution and Napoleon, she married instead Louis-Philippe, head of the Orleans branch of the French royal family in 1809. In 1830, following the overthrow of both Napoleon and the restored Bourbon branch of French royalty, Louis-Philippe became King of the French (not \"King of France\"), with Marie Amélie as Queen. King Louis-Philippe, known as the Citizen King of \"the bourgeois king\", was believed by ardent royalists to be lacking in zeal for monarchy, but his Queen was subject to no such suspicion. Another revolution (1848) stripped Louis-Philippe of his crown, and the former royal couple moved to England. The King died on August 26, 1850, five months after this letter was written. Marie Améle died in 1866, and was buried - according to her wish - in the last gown she had worn as reigning queen. Heavily stained throughout. Some ink smeared, but legible. Light surface creases. Small notch on top of fold. Small tear on bottom of fold. Corners worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
