Rare English replica of 19th Century skeleton clock, circa 1970, in excellent condition.Time only, approximately 2 days per winding. The easy pull cord in the marble base eliminates removing the sturdy glass cover (no cracks or chips). Thermometer flanked by 2 brass columns appears to lack mercury. Signed \"F.H. Whitlock\" on back frame. With marble base and glass cover: 23\" x 12½\" x 6\". Dial 4½\".
This quality signed English creation is faithful to the original design with brass eagle mounted on silver orb. Delicate wheels and gearing, adjustable crutch screws and rating nut for precise adjustments. Keeps excellent time. (An earlier, similar version is in the Willard Clock Museum. NAWCC Watch and Clock Bulletin, 2016, reports sale of a Simon Willard version for $19,680.)
The lengthy chain travels around a large winding drum behind the thermometer, cris-crosses to a second wheel behind the dial. The weight at left keeps tension on the chain. The small weight at the right rises and falls with the driving weight, and is attached to the driving drum.
For more information, see Derek Roberts’ Continental and American Skeleton Clocks (1990). I will enclose research articles on such clocks, including sales results of similar models at Sotheby’s, Christie’s, and photo of a complicated orrery clock by this maker, F.H. Whitlock.
A hard to find double weight skeleton clock with signed movement, original glass cover and perfect working condition which displays the grace and workmanship of the skeleton clock. Note: however well packed, mechanical clocks often require adjustment after shipment. PayPal only, fully insured, shipping to continental United States only.
