ANTOINE COYPEL

Portraitof the French Artist Antoine Coypel,by Alexis Grimou,Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rouen, 1705

Coypel (11 April 1661 – 7 January 1722) was a historypainter, the more famous son of the French painter Noël Coypeland was an important influence in encouraging the Baroque style in French art.

Antoine Coypel was born and diedin Paris and was Coypel was an artistic prodigy. He studied under his father, with whom when he was only 11 years old he spent four years at Rome. After three years in Rome, Antoine spent oneyear in northern Italy studying Correggio and the Bolognese and Venetianschools. In 1676 he returned to Paris, where at the age of eighteen he wasadmitted into the Académie de peinture et de sculpture,of which he became professor and rector in 1707, and director in 1714.

In 1681 he was received as amember of the French Royal Academy and then in 1716 he was appointed king\'s painter, and he was ennobled in thefollowing year.

His great work of decoration wasthe ceiling of the Royal chapel at Versailles (1716), in the manner of the Roman Baroque. He also carried out large-scale paintings illustrating themes of the Aeneidfor the Palais-Royal(1714–1717).

Antoine Coypel received a carefulliterary education, the effects of which appear in his works; but the gracefulimagination displayed by his pictures is marred by the fact that he was notsuperior to the artificial taste of his age. He was a clever etcher, andengraved several of his own works. His Discours prononcés dans lesconferences de 1\'Academie royale de Peinture, etc.; first appeared in 1721.

His half-brother Nöel-Nicolas and his son Charles-Antoine Coypel (1694–1752) werealso accomplished painters. the sculptor FrançoisDumont was his brother-in-law

ROEG, MICHAEL (or MARTIN). Also REUG or RUCK (Norweg).

Medallist of the first half of the eighteenth century, born about 1685, worked at Copenhagen till 171 5 when he was called over to France, receiving 1000 livres to defray his journeying expenses. He abjured theprotestant faith, but on the death of Louis XIV. He found himself instraightened circumstances, and was on the point of accepting an offer from theKing of Portugal to go to Lisbon, when the Regent, Duke Philip of Orleans, attached him to his service, and granted him a pension of 1200 livres.

Some of his medals are signed: ROG. He executed aboutsixty pieces, either as originals or reproductions of the Louis XIV. And XV.series, but he does not appear to have produced any work of superior merit.

Amongst his best known productions are:- Memorial Medalof Prince George of Denmark, 1708 (two varieties, one with bust of PrinceGeorge; signed: ROG; Med. III., 11, p. 334, n\"\" 163, 164); —Victories of the French and Spaniards a,t Ekeren, 1703 — 148 — (engraved in conjunction with T. Bernard in 171 5); —Ant. Coypei, painter, 1661-1728; — Philip, Duke of Orleans, and his consort,171 5 ; — Elizabeth Charlotte, Duchess of Orleans, 1717,- etc.

Roeg was almost exclusively employed to recut dies ofthe Louis XIV. series which had become damaged by use and to do the work whichthe Engraver-general or the chief Medallists at the Mint would not undertakethemselves.
