Rare Pattern 1895 British Army Infantry Officer\'s Sword, Victorian, Boer War Era:
$595.00

Scarce and very nice example of a British Pattern 1895 Infantry Officer\'s sword. These swords were only produced for two years, between 1895 and 1897 (the latter year being when they were superseded by a revised version), so are very rare. Also, most examples which are encountered have the earlier curved Pattern 1845 blade mated to a P1895 hilt as an economy measure. However this one has its proper regulation Pattern 1892 straight blade, designed to thrust only, not cut, making it even rarer. It was made by the venerable military outfitter Hawkes & Co.

The blade is absolutely stunning, and the \'frost\' etched decoration is untouched and nearly perfect, with just a few minor spots of slight staining. It has Victoria\'s \'VR\' cypher on both sides, and retains its original polish overall. The LH side of the forte is etched with the maker\'s name of \'Hawkes & Co. Piccadilly\', and above this are the royal arms and motto \'Dieu Et Mon Droit\'. This serves as the royal warrant, as below it is etched \'To The Queen\' (i.e. manufacturers to the queen and her household). The RH side of the forte is etched with the traditional interlocking triangles (which look like a Star of David, but in fact are not), and the brass proof mark consists of a crown with the word \'Proved\' below. The back of the blade is stamped with the serial number \'4292\'.

All the hilt components retain much of their original nickel plating, and the guard is in good condition, with some light spotting and staining but no bends or knocks, and has thecrownedroyal \'VR\' cypher of Queen Victoria. These guards differ from the Pattern 1897 in that the piercings are slightly larger, and the inner part of the guard is not turned over (a feature that was introduced later to lessen wear to uniforms). The sharkskin grip is excellent, and retains all of its original binding wires.

The steel scabbard is sound, and it too has most of its original nickel plating, with some patches of light staining here and there. The blade fits well, and thereisa slight ding on the inner side.
