This is a vintage Rokuoh-Sha Type 89 WWII Era Japanese Machine Gun Camera. The camera was manufactured by the Konishoruko Camera Company (which later became Konica).
The camera comes in its original wood box and the extras shown in the photos.
This gun camera (unlike most that are sold on ) does function as far as it winds up, turns all sprockets when the trigger is pulled, the shutter moves correctly. After cleaning the lenses, this camera should be able to take pictures. These cameras can fire one frame at a time or rapid firing until the spring runs down. There are actually 2 lenses on this type of cameras that superimpose over top of each other on each frame of film. The one in the barrel takes the actual photo with cross hairs overlaid on the target. The 2nd lens is in the cockpit on the top of the gun which takes a photo through a bounce mirror of a pocket stopwatch which would have been mounted inside the cockpit opposite the mirror to superimpose on the photo. You can see these in the photos I have taken. There is no stopwatch with this camera, nor was a stopwatch ever left in the camera when not in use.
A lot of these cameras were never used. This one has heavy signs of being used and there is deteriorated film in the film canisters.
This item is also available for pick up if desired.
\"It was used as a way of training Japanese military airplane machine gunners. The machine gun camera would be mounted on to Japanese military aircraft, in place of the real machine guns, during training flights. The gunners would then fire the machine gun camera at various ground based, or airborne targets — just as if they were firing the real guns. Instead of spraying bullets, however, they were snapping photos. The resulting photographs would later be developed and analyzed in order to determine the gunner’s accuracy. Once the gunners, using the machine gun cameras, achieved sufficient proficiency with the machine gun camera, they would then graduate to the real see our other sales.
