Ruby Thomas - Native American Horsehair Mini Basket (Tohono O\'odham/Papago) :
$1500.00

RARE!Extremely nice mini horse hair weaving (shallow bowl) by Tohono O\'odham weaver, Ruby Thomas. This horse hair basket came from an old collector\'s collection. He identified the weaver he bought it from as Ruby Thomas. Ruby was one of the finest weavers of mini horse hair baskets the Tohono O\'odham Nation has ever known. Two other independent weavers, who are familiar with Ruby\'s work, also identified the basket.
Classic \"Ruby\" design with a star in the center, a snake wrapped around that, then a series of dog tracks followed by mountainous geometric designs around the edge. This is a polychrome (multi-color) basket.
Imagine the patience and dexterity to weave something this small! This is one of the best woven horse hair baskets you are likely to see anywhere!
Measures a large 5 1/8\" across.Come with certificate of authenticity. This is the real deal! The Tohono O\'odham (AKA Papago) Indians are located in the Arizona desert and are famous for finely woven baskets. Thousands of years ago, the Hohokam, settled along the Salt, Gila, and Santa Cruz Rivers. These were the ancestors of the Tohono O’odham, making them one of the oldest Native American Indian Tribes of the Southwest. Baskets are produced by the Tohono O\'odham from various materials such as willow, yucca and horse hair. Miniature versions of these baskets are highly sought after by collectors. Basket making is a long tradition of the Tohono O\'odham and each one is unique to the maker. Basket pictured is what you receive. Miniature horse hair baskets are wonderful gifts or for own for your collection (and they are less expensive than buying a whole horse)!Western Trading Post is family owned and operated. Located in Arizona just north of the Tohono O’odham (Papago Indians), just south of the Akimel O’odham (Pima Indians), just east of the Ak-Chin O’odham (branch of Pima Indians) and only a short driving distance from the Apache (N’dee), Navajo (Dine′), Zuni, Hopi, Yavapai, Mojave, and Hualapai Indians.
