Really Nice Civil War ROSEWOOD FIFE, Marked by Manufacturer CROSBY, New Hampshire Use
DESCRIPTION: Scans show it all.....scarce wooden Civil War fife. Made of nice smooth rosewood. Long German silver ferrules on each end with nice patina. Nice appearance and this has the characteristic \"swelling\" (about 1/8\" larger diameter) at the blow hole. Besides the blow hole it has the standard 6 holes for fingering. Still has the wooden plug inside, just above the blow hole, to insure that the wind went in the proper direction. Fifes were a popular musical instrument in every regiment and the sound was very military and carried well. A simple fife like this would play 3 octaves of notes!!!
Stamped faintly just below the blow hole is \"Geo. Cloos, CROSBY\". MARKED CROSBY FIFES ARE FAIRLY UNCOMMON. This is a nice musician item to add to any collection and of course, especially to go with a collection of musical related items. This one came out of New Hampshire, most likely used by a New Hampshire regiment, and has been in my collection for many years. IT IS AN ACTUAL CIVIL WAR FIFE, NOT A LATER PERIOD WANNA-BE.
Nicely made. Measures 17\" long. Has 2\" decorative German Silver ferrules at each end. Excellent condition.
This has a great look. CAN BE ADDED TO A DISPLAY OR COLLECTION OR ACTUALLY USED IN PARADES OR AROUND THE CAMPFIRE !!
