Description
Saturated with rich jewel tines in red, green, blue and gold, this classic Tanjore reverse glass painting has Gopi Krishna as a central theme surrounded by his eight consorts or gopis.
All figures have a well rounded body, almond shaped eyes and elaborate jewellery. Krishna with his signature peacock feather in his hair is surrounded by eight adoring gopis.
This typical Gopikrishna scene is housed in an enclosure created by means of an arch adorned with elaboratly decorated curtains and wood carvings and gilt. 2 Stylised parrots on either end on the top in the background sets the tone for the passionate and romantic theme.
Both Krishna and the gopis are dressed in traditional silks (saris) of that era with gold jewellery around their necks, arms, feet and hair.
The painting uses colors and Gold paint to highlight various aspects of the painting - ornaments, dresses and hair. The details on the clothes, jewellery, facial expressions, background and surrounding border are exquisite for a painting of this size.
A breathtakingly beautiful painting, the impact in a darkened room is that of a glowing presence.
Traditional Tanjore paintings are possessed as heirlooms
Framed in wood with traces of gold paint borders.
Tanjore paintingis a major form of classicalSouth Indianpaintingfrom the town ofThanjavur(anglicized asTanjore) inTamil Nadu,India. The art form dates back to about 1600 AD, a period when theNayakasof Thanjavur encouraged art—chiefly, classical dance and music—as well as literature, both inTeluguand Tamil. Tanjore paintings are known for their surface richness, vivid colors, compact composition and especially the glittering gold foils used to give the paintings their rich look . Essentially serving as devotional icons, the subjects of most paintings areHindugods, goddesses, and saints. Episodes from Hindu tradition are drawn upon as elaborations of the main figure or figures placed in the central section of the picture.
Thanjavur glass paintings following the techniques of Chinese reverse glass paintings were popularised during the 18th century. These paintings were done on the reverse surface of a glass sheet with strips of metal beaten into transparent gaps to simulate the effect of jewellery and precious stones.
In modern times, these paintings have become souvenirs of festive occasions in South India, pieces to decorate walls, and collectors\' items for art lovers
