The Liberation of Belgrade Medal
The medal for the Liberation of Belgrade was established by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on June 9, 1945. The medal was awarded for the liberation of the city of Belgrade, Yugoslavia. The time period considered for the Liberation of Belgrade medal was from September 29, 1944 to October 22, 1944. The Liberation of Belgrade Medal was awarded approximately 70,000 times, however, when Marshal and Dictator of Yugoslavia, I.B. Tito broke ties with the Soviet Union in the 1950\'s, the medal was supposed to ne turned in for the Medal for Combat Service. Many medals were turned in and exchanged, which had the effect of making the Liberation of Belgrade Medal the rarest of all the campaign medals.
The medal measures 32mm in diameter and is made of brass. The medal is circular in shape and has a ring at the top position to attach the medal to the 5-sided suspension. The front of the medal has a wreath with a ribbon wrapped around it that covers the entire outside edge of the medal except for the top. The Russian words \"Liberation of\" run along the wreath on the sides. The Russian word for \"Belgrade\" runs straight across the bottom. The back of the medal has the date 20 October 1944 in three lines in the center, and a small star at the top. This medal is variation 1, the correct one.
