A very, very rare early 1870’s Knights of Pythias Sword uniquely crafted in a style similar to Masonic Knights Templar swords.Hardly any of the Pythias swords on the market look like this. The sword features a hand engraved two-sided custom designed Grip. One side has an elaborate artistic Coat-of-Arms with Shield, Helmet, Spear, Axe and two Swords. Beautifully engraved and enhanced by red color. The other side has intricately entwined initials with touches of subtle blue and red. At center of the guard is a dramatic battle ready Warrior with FCB onShield and sword. The brass scabbard has a Warrior on horseback and KP initials. The blade has gold enhanced Rococo etchings including a Skull and Crossed Bones on a Bible. Most unusual for a Pythian sword. The pommel has an Eagle seated on a Helmet. Typical of some early Secret Society swords, the silver and metal mounts are dark toned. It enhances the drama. The sword is in very good vintage condition. Naturally being well over 100 years old, there is normal expected wear here and there. The grip has common thin hairline cracks, but is super solid. The name of the originalowner is on the blade as is the maker’s logo. The sword in its scabbard measures approximately 36 ½ inches. Alone the sword is 35 ¾ inches. The blade is 28 inches This is a precious and highly attractive historic relic that showcases the very finest old world craftsmanship. SUPER-RARE HISTORIC ANTIQUE 1870’S KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS MASTER-CRAFTED RITUAL SWORD! ENGRAVED COLOR GRIP! HIGHLY UNUSUAL! This unique antique Knights of Pythias sword was made in circa 1870\'s by the famous \"Raymond & Whitlock\", a historic old time sword maker headquartered on 14th Sreet in New York City. They operated under this name for only five years, from 1870 to 1875. In later years, the company dropped Whitlock and operated under Raymond\'s name. They made swords for the various branches within Freemasonry, the Odd Fellows and other so-called \"Secret Societies\" or fraternal organizations. Their work ranked mighty high alongside the “Ames Sword Company”, \"M. C. Lilley & Co\", “The Pettibone Bros” and “William Horstmann of Philadelphia”.This ornate gold Knights of Pythias Sword is a Historical Memento. Do not let it escape!!! Thank You.THE LEGENDARY KNIGHTS OF PYTHIASThe Illustrious Order of the \"Knights of Pythias\" were, historically speaking, a significant development from Freemasonry. While NOT a Masonic organization in any way, they nonetheless evolved from Masonry and therefore are an integral part of Masonic cultural as well as artistic history. The Order was founded during the Civil War in 1864 by a prominent Freemason named Justus H. Rathbone. It is noteworthy that virtually most early Pythian leaders were also active Freemasons. And most were Civil War veterans. Oddly enough, as the membership gradually grew in numbers, a gentle rivalry developed between the \"Knights of Pythias\" and the \"Freemasons\". As the periodic animosities subsided, it was quite common, as was more frequently the case with the \"Odd Fellows\", that members belonged to the Masonic Order as well. The \"Knights of Pythias\" remained somewhat open in their use of ritual, and unlike the more secretive and ritually Masonic-like \"Odd Fellows\", they were less involved with esoteric arts and mystical studies. The principles that comprised the basis of the \"Knights of Pythias\" originated with the ancient Greek Pythagorean Morality Legend of the Friendship between Damon and Pythias. Borrowing some of their humanistic ideals from Masonic Philosophy and Tradition, the Knights went on to become an International Order that has been active in Philanthropy and in Humanitarian-Oriented Philosophy. They had also established a large Military Branch, known as the \"Uniform Ranks, Knights of Pythias\". In olden days, during parades, one could marvel at the spectacle of these Majestic Looking Troops marching down the pathway, all dressed up in their Theatrical Uniforms with these Glistening Triangular Knight\'s Medals, dangling from their Coats, and with Heavily Ornate Swords at their sides. All this activity began with the Horrors of the Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln was an early supporter of the Knights, as he realized that their ritual was symbolic of all the Highest, Most Desirable Ideals. Subsequently. the \"Knights of Pythias\" became the First American Order to be Chartered by an Act of Congress. Peace through Understanding is their Motto.CHECK OUR sales EACH WEEK FOR A WIDE SELECTION OF THE FINEST FRATERNAL &; MASONIC SWORDS, ANTIQUES & OTHER FASCINATING QUALITY COLLECTIBLES!AND NOW...OUR FINE HISTORIC ITEM...VERY RARE ANTIQUE KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS SWORDNotice of Copyright OwnershipPlease be advised that ALL and ANY parts of this sale Ad are fully protected under the rules of International Copyright Law.
