VERY OLD PHOTOGRAPH OF CONFEDERATE JOHN S. MOSBY, \"GRAY GHOST\"; UNCOMMON POSE: $165.00
I am disposing of a 45 year old collection of antique and primitive items from my personal collections. This will include books, militaria, old photographs, documents, and decoys, and even some 1960\'s 45 rpm records! All came from sales and estate sales in the South and were gathered over the past 45 years. I will be adding items over the next few weeks so please check back often here as well as at my store. No international shipping and PayPal only as per rules. PLEASE EXCUSE REFLECTIONS AND GLARE ON PHOTOGRAPHS. EXAMINE PHOTOGRAPHS CAREFULLY AS THEY ARE PART OF THE DESCRIPTION. This is from a collection of Confederate photographs, copyphotographs, engravings, etc. that were gathered over the years by J Ben Fuqua. He was born in Tennessee in 1879, and served as state representative inTennessee before moving to Florida where he was known as a Southern historianas well as a politician and jurist. Much of his collection now resides in theManatee County Florida Public Library. Most of his items were collected in the late 1800\'s or early years of the1900’s and several of his photographic copies were made by the famous Cookstudio of Richmond post war. Fuqua bought many of his photographs un-mountedand pasted them on all sorts of backing in notebooks. His collection containeda few original autographs and seemed to focus on N.B. Forrest’s Cavalry and its associated officers. Apparently many of his copies of photographs were of civil war period originals in the hands of descendants and some may not have been published before. This is a fine portrait which I believe was made by the short-lived platinotype method (popular for only a short time in late 1800\'s because of its expense). It is an uncommon pose of Mosby which I have not seen before. It measures 4\" x 6\" and is a beautiful photograph of this well known Confederate cavalry officer. It is a fine clear photograph which was most likely made from the original wartime negative after the war and thus could be considered a \"from life\" image. There were other similar copy photos of Confederate notables in this group which were made by the famous George Cook of Richmond who had acquired the original negatives of most of the Richmond wartime photographers. The photograph speaks for itself showing Mosby in his uniform. No damage except slight age toning of the photograph.
