British Memorial Plaque, British War Medal & Victory Medal Issued For 51648 Pte. Alfed James Wood & 78517 Pte. William Wood, Of The East Yorkshire Regiment & Northumberland Fusiliers.
Lot includes Memorial Plaque (Alfred), British War Medal (Alfred), Victory Medal (Alfred), British War Medal (William), Victory Medal (William),photocopy of medal index card, research & CWGC \"certificate\". The set came from the same vendor, they are brothers, this is supported by a 1911 census record, Alfred James\'s CWGC record and William\'s Northumberland Fusiliers record. Alfred James Wood served with the 1st. Bn. of the East Yorkshire Regiment (51648). Alfred was killed on the 10/09/1918 and is remembered at the Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery. James was 23 years old. His brother William Wood served with the 11th Bn. of the Northumberland Fusiliers (78517) and thankfully survived the war. Before the war they both lived with their parents James and Mary at 2 Stable Row, Victoria Garesfield, County Durham. In 1911, Alfred James is recorded as working as brick maker, whilst his younger brother William is still at school. Their full entitlement is on offer here.
Alfred James was killed when the 1st Bn. East Yorkshire Regiment went into action around Chapel Hill near Sorel-Le-Grand (near Gouzeaucourt on the Somme). The attack is described by the brigade war diary as being \"unsuccessful. Considerable opposition was met with and line remained Lowland Support from W.11.c7.8 to W.18.b.1.3. Touch mainatined with 17th Division left, but situation on right obscure. W.24.a and c. apprarently held by Germans in strength. 9 pm - 1st. E. Yorks R. withdrawn into support, original line held by 15th Durham L. I. and 9th KOYLI as before.\"
Memorial Plaques were issued for all ranks of men and women serving in (or under contract with) the British & Imperial (ie: Indian, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand etc) Forces, including those employed in hospitals or the Merchant Navy etc, whose death was attributable to the war. Just over 1.36 million Memorial Plaques were issued.
